After a lovely summer it is time to welcome everyone to the start of this exciting two year Arts Council funded programme at the King George Gallery.  This programme is about key themes that are of importance to the area.  Scrutinising these then encapsulating memories and ideas and converting them into new contemporary pieces of art for all to see.  Things kick off again here on the 11th September from 5.30 when Tim Bennett will be in residency gaining inspiration and working on his piece about the Coal Age for this programme.  Also in residency on that night will be Dave Wood who will be reading out a ‘Soap Opera’ based on coal, created at the Erewash Museum in July.

ThinkerI am a thinker.I like thinking a lot.I like to watch people too, I’ve got nothing better to do.My deepest secret is  unknown to any being. It’s the reason I’m locked in this tall, cold tower.Isolated from everyone and everything.I don’t think it’s that much of a big deal.Everyone has reasons for doing things they shouldn’t.I’d love to smell fresh air.The damp morning dew of grass freshly cut before dawn.I’d love to feel the heated sunbeams hitting my skin, to get the golden tan I’ve always wanted.Laughter, I’d give anything to be able to laugh, to have fun and interact with other people. To taste all the flavours in my mouth, the exotic fruits and spicy flavours tingling on my tongue. This is what I wish for. Some people say I shouldn’t get to experience these things but I believe I should.I’m going to escape one day.One day, I’ll be free.

Thinker

I am a thinker.
I like thinking a lot.
I like to watch people too, I’ve got nothing better to do.
My deepest secret is  unknown to any being.
It’s the reason I’m locked in this tall, cold tower.
Isolated from everyone and everything.
I don’t think it’s that much of a big deal.
Everyone has reasons for doing things they shouldn’t.
I’d love to smell fresh air.
The damp morning dew of grass freshly cut before dawn.
I’d love to feel the heated sunbeams hitting my skin, to get the golden tan I’ve always wanted.
Laughter, I’d give anything to be able to laugh, to have fun and interact with other people.
To taste all the flavours in my mouth, the exotic fruits and spicy flavours tingling on my tongue.
This is what I wish for. Some people say I shouldn’t get to experience these things but I believe I should.
I’m going to escape one day.
One day, I’ll be free.

The rhythm

Always aware, now or sleeping.
Staying in the back of your mind, like a thorn in your side,
As you lick your lips and hit the skin,
Tambourine vibrates, at fingertips,
Alive, tap your feet, slap your thigh,
Ground vibrating, immense,
Shockwaves coursing through your veins,
Excitement, joy, this one rhythm,
Then,
Silence.
Dancing in the garden

Jazz refrain

I’m sitting in a field with my friends
With apples falling from the sky.
I could dance to any kind of music.
Crashing waves, angry Vikings,
Nature’s boys biking, skipping,
Bright knobbly knees
Bright – knobbly – knees

The stars in the sky will make things better.
